Why Replace Timber With uPVC?
Four reasons, and the second is the one that matters most.
End the Painting Cycle
Timber roofline on a two-storey house needs scaffold or ladders every three to five years to repaint. uPVC never needs painting; a wash with soapy water keeps it looking new.
Stop the Rot
Water from overflowing gutters rots timber fascias from behind, then the rafter feet behind them. Once the rafter feet have gone it's a roofing job, not a decorating one. New uPVC on repaired timber stops the cycle.
Improve Appearance
A crisp new roofline in a colour matched to the windows transforms the look of a Sale house from the street, and it's the kind of improvement buyers and surveyors notice.
Better Ventilation
We fit vented soffits as standard, letting air into the roof space at the eaves. Many lofts in Sale, M33 are damp and mouldy simply because the original soffits were solid and the eaves are blocked with insulation.
Fascias and soffits are part of the wider roofline. New boards mean refitting the gutters, so we usually price new guttering alongside, and fitting vented soffits is the simplest way to improve loft ventilation.
The Replacement Process
Seven steps, the same on every job, and photographed so you can see the timber that went in behind the boards.
Survey and Quote
We look at the roofline from the ground and from a ladder, check for rot in the rafter feet, measure the runs and give you a written quote with the colour and profile agreed.
Scaffold Erection
Two-storey work needs safe access, usually a tower or a scaffold lift, which is included in the quote and in the programme.
Remove Existing
Old gutters, fascias, soffits and bargeboards come off. We never cap over existing boards; it hides rot and traps moisture against it.
Rafter Repairs
Rotten rafter feet are cut back and new timber spliced on, and the wall plate is checked. This is the step a cheap roofline job skips and the reason it fails.
Install New Boards
Full-thickness uPVC fascias fixed to the repaired rafters with stainless fixings, vented soffits, bargeboards on the gables, and eaves protection and over-fascia vents where the roof needs them.
Guttering
New guttering and downpipes go on at the same time, sized and set to fall properly; see gutter installation.
Cleanup
Old boards and gutters taken away, the garden and drive cleared, and photographs of the finished roofline and the rafter repairs sent to you.
uPVC Products We Use
We fit full-replacement fascia boards of 16 to 18 mm thickness, not the thin capping boards sold for over-cladding, with matching vented or solid soffits, bargeboards, box ends and trims from established manufacturers whose products carry a ten-year guarantee or longer. All fixings are stainless steel or polymer-headed so they don't rust and stain the boards. For period properties in Sale we can fit ogee and decorative profiles that suit the house.
Colour Options
White is still the most popular across Sale, M33, but black, anthracite grey, brown, rosewood, golden oak and cream are all standard, and most houses look best with the roofline matched to the windows and doors. We bring samples so you can see the colour against the brick or render before deciding.
